The Main Event

The main events of Slow Food Nation took place between August 29 and September 1 (Labor Day), 2008 at San Francisco’s Civic Center and Fort Mason Center. Read highlights from some of the crowd’s favorites:

  • Marketplace

    65,000 people connected community and cuisine at a farmers’ market, urban garden and “soap box” stage.

  • Victory Garden

    Inspired by the self-sufficiency campaigns of World War II America, the Slow Food Nation Victory Garden was a living testament – right in front of City Hall – to a healthy community’s ability to feed and support itself.

  • Food for Thought

    Leaders in food, health, environmentalism and social justice convened for teaching, discussion and calls to action.

  • Taste Pavilions

    The Taste Pavilions showcased good, clean and fair food from America’s best food artisans.

  • Taste Workshops

    Artisans led one-hour classes on favorite foods and Slow Food topics.

  • Green Kitchen

    Star chefs demonstrated the most essential and basic techniques for preparing good, clean and fair food for the whole family.

  • Changemakers Day

    Hundreds of leaders from the private, public, civic and non-profit sectors convened to discuss building sustainable food systems.

  • Slow Food Rocks

    A superstar lineup kept the crowd dancing at Slow Food Nation’s music festival.
