Community Days in the Victory Garden
Slow Food Nation Victory Garden | Civic Center | Free
As the City of San Francisco extended our “lease” on the Victory Garden’s location in front of City Hall until December 6, 2008, Slow Food Nation organized a series of weekend activities to bring the community into the garden.
Saturday, October 18, 11:00am to 3:00pm
Growth
Activities and workshops for kids and adults on how to grow food in San Francisco. The morning featured hands-on educational garden activities for kids, including a puppet show on food and nutrition; the afternoon featured short workshops on urban farming and a performance by the Brass Liberation Orchestra.
Participating organizations: Alemany Farm, Urban Sprouts, The Edible Schoolyard, Puppet Medicine, The Urban Permaculture Guild and The Brass Liberation Orchestra.
Saturday, November 15, 1:00pm to 4:00pm
Open Mic in the Victory Garden
Slow Food Nation invited poets, storytellers, musicians, dancers, anyone and everyone to come perform in front of an open mic on the Soap Box stage in the Victory Garden. As cultural expressions often grow from traditions of the land, the seasons, food, farming, beekeeping, harvesting and struggling for food justice, we particularly invited performances of any and every art rooted in agrarian traditions. Picnics and kids were specifically allowed.
Saturday, November 22, 12:00 p.m. (Noon)
Community Eat-In
An Eat-In is a group of people gathering in a public space in order to share a meal. On November 22, the last day the Victory Garden was open to the public, over 100 Bay Area residents came to the Victory Garden to represent their communities and break bread with others who want to make sure everyone has access to good, healthy, real food. Food justice activists from the Victory Gardens 2008+, San Francisco Food Bank, Glide Memorial Church, The California Food and Justice Coalition, La Cocina, Quesada Gardens and Project Homeless Connect highlighted ways to improve our local food system, and then we all sat down to eat together.
