Sonoma Hike: Sonoma Baylands on Sonoma Land Trust property

Sunday, August 31 | Trekking across Sears Point | 10:00am to 2:00pm

Rating: A moderate 5-mile hike with 400 feet of elevation gain leading to great views of the entire Bay Area. There is a long, slow ascent through open grasslands with occasional steep climbs. The only trails are those made by cows, so be prepared for uneven footing at times!

Notes: This hike starts just above the edge of serene San Pablo Bay at Sears Point Ranch, which the Sonoma Land Trust purchased in 2004 when a casino development was proposed for the site. The property is now permanently protected and incorporates cattle grazing, farming, watershed restoration and more than 1,000 acres of wetlands. The Sears Point site hosts numerous sensitive plant and wildlife communities indicative of a healthy native grassland. The hike leads under Highway 37 and across ranchlands that offer views of the North Bay’s network of preserved sites.

Leader: John Brosnan, Sonoma Land Trust Baylands Program Manager

How to get there: San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge off Highway 37, east of Novato.

Proceed through the intersection at Lakeville Road and stay to the right. Just past the truck scales, signal to turn right and use the right shoulder to slow down as you approach the Sears Point Ranch buildings on your right. The driveway is immediately off of the highway; the address is 2100 Sears Point Road. Parking is available at the ranch.
