Saveur Magazine is the Lead Media Sponsor of Slow Food Nation 2008
New York, NY (June 4, 2008)—Award-winning food, wine, and travel magazineSaveur is the lead media sponsor of Slow Food Nation 2008, the largest celebration of American food the United States has ever witnessed.
“We are excited to support the inaugural edition of Slow Food Nation,” said James Oseland, editor-in-chief of Saveur. “More than ever, people are interested in connecting food and culture. Slow Food and Saveur have a mutual goal in drawing attention to those connections.”
Slow Food Nation, the largest celebration of American food in history, will take place in San Francisco over Labor Day Weekend (August 29 through September 1, 2008). An unprecedented event, Slow Food Nation will bring together tens of thousands so that they may experience an extraordinary range of activities highlighting the connection between plate and planet. Participants will taste delicious food at a 50,000-square-foot pavilion; meet farmers and producers at a marketplace surrounding a newly planted urban garden in the heart of the city; learn from visionary speakers who will offer solutions; and engage in political discourse about shaping a more sustainable food system.
“We are thrilled to partner with Saveur, a magazine known for its focus on regional dishes, authentic recipes, and classic cooking techniques,” said Anya Fernald, executive director of Slow Food Nation. “Bringing the experience of Slow Food Nation to Saveur readers is a natural fit, one that reinforces our mission of building a food system that is good, clean, and fair.”
At the peak of harvest season and on the eve of a presidential election, Slow Food Nation will gather local citizens and visitors, farmers and food artisans, political leaders, environmental advocates, and health-care experts, community educators, and artists and will feature tastings, chef demonstrations, a major conference on food values, social justice, and the environment, an urban farm, a music festival and workshops, forums, films and interactive exhibits.
Saveur will be involved in many aspects of Slow Food Nation, from moderating a key “Food for Thought” Speakers’ Series panel to designing Slow Food Nation Taste Workshops—in-depth guided gastronomical and educational experiences led by culinary experts. On Saturday, July 12, Saveur will also partner with Acme Chophouse in San Francisco to celebrate the planting of the Slow Food Nation Victory Garden—a 10,000-square-foot urban vegetable garden to be planted on the lawn of the Civic Center Plaza.
About Slow Food Nation
Slow Food Nation is a subsidiary nonprofit of Slow Food USA and part of the international Slow Food movement. It was created to organize the first-ever American collaborative gathering to unite the growing sustainable food movement and introduce thousands of people to food that is good, clean, and fairly produced through enjoyable, accessible, and educational activities. Slow Food Nation is dedicated to creating a framework for deeper environmental connection to our food and aims to inspire and empower Americans to build a system for supplying food that is sustainable, healthful, and delicious.
About Saveur
Since 1994, Saveur has sought out stories from around the globe that put food into a cultural context, whether it’s the history behind a beloved ingredient or the tradition that informs a regional specialty. On every page the magazine strives to honor a fundamental truth: that cooking food is one of the most universal—and beautiful—means of human expression.
Saveur, which has won multiple National Magazine and James Beard Foundation awards for its articles, photography, and design, is published nine times a year by Bonnier Corporation.
