Roots of Change Facilitates Collaboration of More Than 600 Non-Profit and Business Leaders for Day Long Discussion, Dialog and Action
Panelists Include: Wendell Berry, Claire Hope Cummings, Betty Fussell, Mas Masumato, Gary Nabhan, Walter Robb and More
San Francisco, CA, August 12, 2008 — Roots of Change announced today the selection of panelists who will present at the upcoming Changemakers Day, taking place during Slow Food Nation over Labor Day Weekend in San Francisco. Held on Friday, August 29, at the San Francisco Civic Center, Changemakers Day will bring together more than 600 national food system leaders for inspiring dialog, critical thinking and plans for direct action. Changemakers Day is open to the nonprofit and business community and is by invitation only.
A collaboration between Roots of Change and Slow Food Nation, Changemakers Day will fuse the power of the sustainable food system movement with numerous other statewide and national organizations working to improve the food and agriculture system. Roots of Change is a collaborative of diverse leaders and institutions unified in common pursuit of achieving a sustainable food system in California by 2030. An unprecedented event, Slow Food Nation will bring together tens of thousands to experience an extraordinary range of activities highlighting the connection between plate and planet.
Twenty-nine panels will provide participant forums to discuss pressing issues. Session titles include: Nutrition for all: improving community health; No farms, no food! Preserving the land base; Stalemate or Dynamite: The Next Federal Food Fight; and Network power: food politics in the connected age. For a full list of panels, please visit: www.slowfoodnation.org/changemakers
“Large scale collaborations involving unconventional allies from the farming, social justice, and health sectors are required to accelerate the shift toward sustainability,” said Michael R. Dimock, Roots of Change President. “Slow Food Nation will be a watershed event in the work to improve food and agriculture and it seemed imperative to convene the thought leaders, movers and shakers guiding the work.”
Roots of Change is working toward the goal of a sustainable food system within one generation, and the event will serve to stimulate and generate a recipe of new ideas toward this end, as well as provide a launching platform for their new Changemakers Network, a growing alliance of food system transformation advocates that include farmers, eaters, business owners, conservationists, food access advocates and restaurateurs, among others.
Changemakers Day panelists include notable food leaders such as Brahm Ahmadi, People’s Grocery; Laura Avery, Santa Monica Farmers Market; Wendell Berry, author; Dan Imhoff, author; Deborah Kane, Ecotrust; Holly King, Great Valley Center; August Schumacher, Undersecretary USDA, 1993-2000; Don Shaffer, RSF Social Finance; Tom Tomich, Ag Sustainability Institute, UC Davis; Tom Willey, TD Willey Farms; and many more. Changemakers Day participants come from across the NGO and business communities including representatives from diverse organizations such as Acme Chophouse, CA Dept. of Conservation, Division of Land Resource Protection, City Slicker Farms, Kaiser Permanente, New Resource Bank, Organic Valley Family of Farms, San Mateo County Health Department, South LA Community Kitchen, TBL Capital, Veritable Vegetable and many more.
“Changemakers Day offers an excellent opportunity to get more people involved developing a more sustainable farming and food system,” said Richard Rominger, farmer, Roots of Change Stewardship Council member, former Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and former head of the California Department of Food and Agriculture. “We want everyone in the food chain from farmers to consumers to share the bounty and we want future generations to have the benefits of our last great agricultural production area in the world, providing a big part of food and national security.”
