The Sustainable Wine Bar: Slow Food Nation Presents
the Most Diverse Wines in the United States

More than 450 Wines from 40 States and 150 Appellations
to be Showcased at the Taste Pavilions

Featuring the Country’s Largest Selection of Organic, Sustainable and Biodynamic Wines

San Francisco, CA (August 11, 2008) – Slow Food Nation announced today it will feature the most diverse and extensive wines from more than 40 states in the U.S.  The 450 wines from 150 appellations will be poured by professional sommeliers at Slow Food Nation, the largest celebration of food in America, being held in San Francisco over Labor Day weekend (August 29 – September 1).

A first of its kind, the Wine Pavilion will be a part of the Taste Pavilions, Slow Food Nation’s grand celebration of good, clean and fair foods, wines and spirits. This is the first time that participants can sample wines in one venue from nearly every state in the country with well-known wineries represented, such as Brick House, Cain Vineyards, Joseph Phelps, Robert Sinskey, Rubicon, Stags’ Leap and Tablas Creek. The Wine Pavilion will also feature unexpected wineries from states, such as Arkansas (Chateau Aux Arc), Kansas (Holy-Field), Missouri (Chaumette Vineyard and Winery) and New Mexico (Gruet Winery).

“America has a bountiful land with rich terroir,” said Renato Sardo, Slow Food Nation’s wine pavilion curator and former International Director for Slow Food International. “Slow Food Nation will showcase the American appellations and viticulture areas to experience a true cross-section of American winemaking.”

The Wine Pavilion will be both informative and interactive. Participants can sample from any of wines on the list as well as ciders and meads (honey wines) and learn about American Viticulture Areas (AVA), the different wine appellations and the various types of certifications. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet and learn from winemakers and experts during facilitated tastings, including Katrina Fetzer, of the Ceago winery and leader in the biodynamic wine movement and Katrina Frey, of Frey Vineyards, America’s oldest organic winery.

The list of wines available at the Sustainable Wine Bar was chosen by a network of 150 Slow Food U.S. chapters, which selected the wines that best represent their terroir and Slow Food’s founding values of good, clean and fair. The Taste Pavilions will also feature Beer, Bread, Charcuterie, Cheese, Chocolate, Coffee, Fish, Honey & Preserves, Ice Cream, Native Foods, Olive Oil, Pickles & Chutney, Spirits and Tea. The Green Kitchen takes place here, where acclaimed chefs will demonstrate techniques for making simple, everyday dishes sustainable.

Each ticket gains entry to all 15 Taste Pavilions, including the Wine Pavilion, and Green Kitchen demonstrations, for the entire four-hour period. Participants can purchase tickets to the Taste Pavilions for one of the four sessions, Saturday, August 30 and Sunday, August 31 from 11 am – 3 pm and 5 – 9 pm.
